Pediatric Inpatient, Critical Care and Emergency Research

Pediatric intensivist Dr. Anupam Sehgal and general pediatrician Dr. Anne Moffatt collaborate with investigators from pediatric departments across Canada to strengthen research evidence through membership in the Paediatric Inpatient Research Network (PIRN), the Canadian Critical Care Trials Group (CCCTG) Pediatric Interest Group, and Pediatric Emergency Research Canada (PERC). They are involved as co-investigators in the following multi-centre studies:

  • Patient-oriented Research Priorities for Pediatric Hospital Care: A James Lind Alliance Priority Setting Partnership

  • PRoMPT BOLUS: Pragmatic Pediatric Trial of Balanced Versus Normal Saline Fluid in Sepsis

  • Precision Medicine for Improving the Diagnosis of Pediatric Appendicitis in the Emergency Department (PRIMED) study

  • COVID-19 surveillance study

  • Care and outcomes of Canadian children hospitalized with periorbital and orbital cellulitis

Our department also contributes data to the International Kawasaki Disease Registry and is a participating site in a study examining the association of Kawasaki Disease and COVID-19 with cardiac complications.

In addition, Dr. Sehgal is currently leading a study of treatment adherence to seizure management of children and youth presenting to the emergency departments of two general hospitals (supported by a grant from the Clinical Teachers’ Association of Queen’s (CTAQ) Research Endowment Fund).
