The neonatal intensive care unit (NICU) at Kingston Health Sciences Centre is a member of the Canadian Neonatal Network (CNN) and the Canadian Neonatal Follow-up Network (CNFUN). It contributes data, along with other tertiary care units in Canada, to a standardized national database maintained by the CNN. Listed below are some recent studies that our members have led or been involved in using the CNN data.

Mode of delivery and neonatal outcomes in extremely preterm vertex/non-vertex twins
A national survey of the enteral feeding practices in Canadian neonatal intensive care units
Determining the effect of birth weight on therapeutic hypothermia in neonates with hypoxic-ischemic encephalopathy
Developing and comparing machine learning models for predicting bronchopulmonary dysplasia

Members of the CNN work collaboratively to improve clinical practice and outcomes. Some of the key areas that are currently being investigated include the following:

Respiratory management of extremely preterm neonates
Relative effectiveness and safety of pharmacotherapeutic agents for the management of patent ductus arteriosus (PDA) in preterm infants
Development of a national NICU-specific anti-microbial stewardship program
Improving outcomes for preterm infants and their families

Dr. Khurshid is also collaborating with investigators at Curtin University in Western Australia on an international study to develop evidence-based recommendations for optimal interpregnancy intervals in high-income countries. The local team is currently analyzing Ontario’s administrative health data and the findings will be included in a meta-analysis that will inform recommendations to reduce the risk of preterm and small for gestational age births. The work is supported by a grant from the Clinical Teachers’ Association of Queen’s University CTAQ) Research Endowment Fund. She is also leading a study to develop an online tool for predicting bronchopulmonary dysplasia in very preterm infants, with support from the Innovation Fund.
