Dr. Elmekkawi is a full-time Assistant Professor of Pediatrics at Queen’s University and Division Head of Neonatology at Lakeridge Health.

He completed his postgraduate training in Pediatrics and earned a Master’s degree in Pediatrics through training in Egypt and the United Kingdom in 2007. In September 2015, he successfully completed the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada examination in Neonatal-Perinatal Medicine and became a Subspecialist Affiliate of the Royal College.

Dr. Elmekkawi subsequently completed a fellowship in Neonatal-Perinatal Medicine at The Hospital for Sick Children (SickKids), University of Toronto, in 2016. He also completed the SickKids Teaching Scholars Program at the University of Toronto in August 2016.

Dr. Elmekkawi is actively involved in clinical research and medical education and was the recipient of the Deborah Chiu Research Award in 2017. He has a particular interest in medical education and is passionate about improving access to high-quality medical training in underserved communities and developing countries.

His clinical practice includes caring for critically ill newborns in the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) and providing longitudinal care through the neonatal developmental follow-up clinic.

Outside of medicine, Dr. Elmekkawi enjoys painting, jazz music, audiobooks, international dining, and, most of all, travelling and exploring different parts of the world.
